Löw: "England deserved to win"

They were 2-0 up and managed to lose. Joachim Löw was very self critical after his team lost 3-2 against England in Berlin in the first of their international friendlies. He also came up with some things that his team can work on. DFB.de has put together the players’ and manager’s reaction to the game.

National team head coach Joachim Löw: You can say that England deserved to win the match. It is obviously annoying if you throw away a 2-0 lead but that is what happened today. We had a lot of problems attacking from midfield. There were times when we actually had the ball and the opposition came back into it. The team wasn’t able to calm the game down. There were too many spaces because our organisation was poor.

Mario Gomez: It is somewhat inexcusable. We were playing very well until we were 2-0 up but we didn’t use enough of our chances. Afterwards, we stood off our opponents too much and England are very strong from set-pieces. Personally, I am happy that I am back and been able to have another chance. I am looking to help the team more now rather than worrying about whether or not I score goals.

Toni Kroos: Whenever you play you want to win, so the result is always important. We defended badly in the second half. Of course, we had a new defensive formation but nevertheless it shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

Sami Khedira: It was an unnecessary, stupid defeat. We all need to take a look at ourselves and work hard now. We did a lot right up until the second goal, then after that we were much worse – and England punished us. However, we played well for an hour. We need to play well for 90 minutes against Italy and in the European Championship.
