Löw: “Created a lot of very good chances”

World Champions Germany progressed into the last 16 of the European Championship in France as winners of Group C. Mario Gomez was given his first start of the tournament and scored the winner in the 29th minute. DFB.de has collected the reactions of the players and coach following the match.

Germany head coach Joachim Löw: We created a lot of very good chances but wasted them. Our opponents had no goalscoring opportunities. We simply need to be more purposeful and consistent. We played well but it should have been a more emphatic result.

Mario Gómez: It’s only close if the other team creates a lot of chances. This was a resounding victory. Our finishing was also the problem in the first couple of games. We haven’t used our chances but we are still top of the group.

Mats Hummels: We played convincingly but didn’t score anywhere near enough goals. That has been our shortcoming. We have been very good in attack but have missed that final step, so we have lacked goals. We will have to up our game when we come up against the top teams.

Thomas Müller: We lacked goals. I alone could have been level as the tournament’s top goalscorer. We were greedy. We definitely improved on the pitch today but we are obviously not 100 percent happy. It was a step forward. It was a very committed performance today. I had more chances to score than I have had in the past eight games.

Joshua Kimmich: The coach told me two days ago that he was considering deploying me on the right. He told me yesterday that I was going to be playing. We did extremely well today and just needed to score more goals.
