Liverpool, Can and Klopp draw 0-0 with Spurs

It was a goalless draw for Germany international Emre Can and Liverpool’s new manager Jürgen Klopp on Saturday. On his first match in charge of the Premier League club, the former Dortmund manager saw his side play out a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, taking them to 13 points from nine matches. Tottenham have just one extra point, despite not losing for eight consecutive matches.

"We want to take the initiative and play at a high tempo,” said Klopp shortly before the kick-off at White Hart Lane. That’s exactly what his side did in the opening stages, despite having to cope without England international Daniel Sturridge (knee injury). After a flick on from Emre Can, who Klopp employed in a holding midfield role, Sturridge’s replacement Divock Origi struck the underside of the crossbar.

Klopp as emotional as ever in the dugout

Klopp looked happy as he followed his new team from the touchline. The Reds were lively and aggressive as they pummelled the Tottenham box in the opening stages, barely giving them a chance to break forward. But it was the hosts who came closest to opening the lead after Clinton N’Jie forced a save from Liverpool keeper Simon Mingolet. Harry Kane also came close, but once again Mingolet was well placed to prevent the opener.

Klopp, who following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers signed a three-year contract at the former record champions, having left Dortmund in the summer, was typically emotional as he watched on from the sidelines. “The Normal One”, as he introduced himself to the press last week, a play on José Mourinho’s famous self-proclamation as “The Special One”, watched on as his weakened side struggled to create chances in the second half.

48-year-old Klopp continued to rally his troops, but the tempo remained at a moderate level. His side continued to win challenges and at least try to play the ball forward as the game. Origi showed glimpses of promise, whilst Mingolet also had a few more chances to keep out from Kane, but in the end the sides shared the spoils of a 0-0 draw.
