Leverkusen survive Magdeburg scare, Bayern safely through

There were no shocks in Wednesday’s DFB Cup second-round action, but it still offered its fair share of scares and great moments. Defending champions FC Bayern München eased through and are joined in the last 16 by fellow Bundesliga sides Leverkusen, Gladbach, Hoffenheim, Freiburg and Wolfsburg.

The most entertaining tie of the evening no doubt took place in Magdeburg. The fourth-tier Regionalliga side were 1-0 down to Champions League participants Leverkusen inside three minutes, but managed to get level and force Bayer 04 into extra time. The away side, who went down to ten men in the 78th minute after Heung-Min Son’s red card, looked set for a stunning exit when Niklas Brandt put the underdogs in front nine minutes from time. However, Kyriakos Papadopoulos spared their blushes with his 116th-minute header sending the match to penalties. Emir Spahic missed the opening spot kick, handing Magdeburg the advantage and they had two chances progress when Stefan Kießling hit the bar. But Germany U21 keeper Bernd Leno saved his side with two vital stops, before going on to deny Lars Fuchs in sudden death, sending Leverkusen through to the last 16.

FC Bayern had no problems seeing their way past Hamburg in northern Germany, with Robert Lewandowski, David Alaba and Franck Ribery on the scoresheet for the defending champions. Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored a late consolation goal for HSV in a 3-1 defeat. Third-placed Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg also had no problems as they brushed aside second-division outfit 1. FC Heidenheim with a 4-1 victory, while TSG 1899 Hoffenheim went one better, securing a 5-1 home win over FSV Frankfurt to reach the last 16.

It took SC Freiburg a while to get going in their meeting with the bottom side in the 2. Bundesliga, but TSV 1860 München were ultimately beaten 5-2 in the Allianz Arena, with Admir Mehmedi grabbing a hat-trick for the visitors. Elsewhere, Borussia Mönchengladbach made it 16 competitive matches without defeat this season, seeing off fellow Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 away from home.

Two second-tier sides also got their name in the hat for the last-16 draw. Eintracht Braunschweig had a difficult away night in Würzburg, but ultimately overcame the Regionalliga outfit 1-0 courtesy of a 78th-minute Havard Nielsen strike. RB Leipzig also left it late in their match against Erzgebirge Aue. In fact, the Bundesliga promotion hopefuls only just forced extra time thanks to Yussuf Poulsen’s stoppage-time goal. Leipzig then added two goals in the additional 30 minutes to avoid penalties and progress with a 3-1 win.
