Leverkusen record 2-0 victory over Dortmund

Roger Schmidt’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen team notched up an impressive 2-0 triumph over fellow Champions League contenders Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night. The Werkself hadn’t beaten BVB in the BayArena for nine years. The result means that Dortmund missed out on the chance to close Bayern’s advantage at the top of the table. The record champions dropped their first points of the season earlier in the day.

Thomas Tuchel’s team, who fought back in impressive circumstances to draw 2-2 with Real Madrid in midweek, were 1-0 down after just 10 minutes when Switzerland international Admir Mehmedi headed Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner into the back of the net. The visitors’ best chance of the game fell to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but he could only fire straight at Bernd Leno when well placed (73’). He was left to rue the chance as Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez grabbed a decisive second goal just six minutes later.

Leverkusen, who placed out a 1-1 draw with AS Monaco in Europe’s premier club competition on Tuesday, raced out of the traps and the goal was a reward for their solid start to the game. BVB were rarely given the opportunity to spend time on the ball and although they gained more control of the game as time progressed, the Werkself were able to mop up the pressure and seal the victory by hitting them on the counter.
