Leverkusen grind out goalless draw with Bayern

Record champions Bayern München were held to a goalless draw against Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 29 in the Bundesliga. Despite a man extra for much of the second half and several clear-cut chances, Bayern were unable to score past Germany international Bernd Leno, four days ahead of their second league Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid. Tin Jedvaj was dismissed in the 59th minute after picking up a second yellow.

Tayfun Korkut’s Leverkusen now sit eleventh in the table on 36 points, while Bayern remain top with 69.

Alaba and Vidal denied Bayern winner

Kevin Volland had a chance to put the hosts in the lead in front of 30,210 fans at the BayArena, but lost control at the key moment. Bayern, who made five changes to their starting XI following Wednesday’s Champions League defeat, similarly passed up several early chances. David Alaba saw his shot blocked from close range by Jedvaj, before Vidal’s effort was cleared off the line. Thiago headed just over, while Costa and Vidal again failed to beat Leno in the Leverkusen goal.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men increased the pressure in the second half, with Thomas Müller missing two half-chances early on. The hosts struggled to get forward following Jedvaj’s dismissal, as the visitors kept them pegged back in their own half. Philipp Lahm had arguably the best chance to win it for Bayern, but his shot across goal rolled inches passed the far post.
