Leverkusen goalkeeper Leno: “We were under a lot of pressure”

Bayer 04 Leverkusen look like they are back on track following their 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 20. Germany international Bernd Leno, who kept his side in the game during the first half with several crucial saves, played an important part in his side’s return to form. After the final whistle, Leno talked about the victory, speculation around coach Roger Schmidt and the race for the European places.

Interviewer: Bernd Leno, Leverkusen returned to winning ways with a 3-0 win against Frankfurt having suffered to consecutive defeats beforehand. You made two very good saves in the first half and contributed to this success.

Bernd Leno: My job is to make saves. All 14 players on the pitch today delivered a great performance, that’s what mattered.

Interviewer: Your head coach Roger Schmidt received a lot of criticism after some recent poor performances. How did you handle the situation?

Leno: We were under a lot of pressure, but the important thing was to focus on what mattered as a team. We just need to bring some consistency to our game.

Interviewer: It was a potentially make or break game for coach Roger Schmidt. Did you feel that as well?

Leno: It wasn’t an issue in the team and we just focussed on this particular match. We have to take every game one at a time.

Interviewer: There was speculation in the media one hour before kick-off that Roger Schmidt had been fired by Bayer’s shareholder committee, but this turned out to be a false report. Did you hear anything about it before the game?

Leno: I didn’t turn on my phone.

Interviewer: How do you view Bayer’s chances in the race for a European spot?

Leno: The gap between us and the top of the table is still pretty significant, but it’s not impossible.
