Leverkusen dominate but can't find a winner

A poor chance-conversion rate and a slip from Bernd Leno mean that Leverkusen have dropped points again. Roger Schmidt’s men only managed to draw 1-1 with Augsburg so missed out on the chance to leap into fourth place.

Goalkeeper Leno, who was called into the Germany senior team on Friday, failed to deal with a back pass from Jonathan Tah and saw the ball hit the back of the net after 12 minutes. Karim Bellarabi equalised shortly before the break but Bayer 04 couldn’t find a winner.

Strong start sees FCA go in front

FCA are still struggling, depiste today’s point, and find themselves occupying the relegation play-off spot over the international break. Markus Weinzierl’s men have won just one of their last eight competitive games.

Augsburg played courageously in Munich on matchday four and put in a similar performance early on in Leverkusen. They pressed hard and forced Bayer 04 into a number of mistakes and deservedly took the lead after Leno’s howler.

Bellarabi levels

After taking the lead FCA set back and tried to hit the hosts on the counter. Leverkusen took control of the game. Chicharito hit the post with a long range effort but Bellarabi was on hand to tuck the rebound into the empty net.

The second half started as the first ended – with Bayer 04 attacking. Christoph Kramer and skipper Lars Bender had chances to put them in front early in the half but the best chance fell to set piece specialist Hakan Calhanoglu. The midfielder, however, fired a penalty over the bar after a handball in the Augsburg box.
