Lena Goeßling: "We're not yet satisfied"

As expected it was an intensive game, a hardly fought match and an enthralling occasion. VfL Wolfsburg came out on top against title rivals 1. FFC Frankfurt 2-0 thanks to goals from Martina Müller and Lena Goeßling, meaning the Wolves top the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga table at the midway point of the season.

After the game against Frankfurt, Goeßling, 28, spoke to DFB.de about the game and the first half of the season in general: Wolfsburg are unbeaten, have 29 points, scored 29 goals and conceded one thus far. There are two games left in the Bundesliga ahead of the winter break for Wolfsburg as well as a DFB Cup quarter-final against SC Sand on 20th December.

DFB.de: Ms. Goeßling, you won 2-0 against 1. FFC Frankfurt. What does the victory mean to you?

Lena Goeßling: It was extremely important for us. We are happy and relieved. Victories against Frankfurt are always special. It was a tough game for us: We train for the whole year for games like this. When you play like we did and pick up the three points then obviously you can be delighted. We knew that victory would allow us to put a gap between us and them and we wanted to make sure this happened. We now have a bit of a cushion at the top.

DFB.de: How was the game?

Goeßling: As expected it was an exciting meeting. Frankfurt started strongly and it was clear to see that they have a lot of quality in the squad. We managed to deal with that and scored twice before the break: Through Martina Müller and then my free kick. Obviously that was a perfect scenario for us. We did what we needed after the break and deserved the victory. There’s still work to be done though, we have a lot of hard work to do if we want to reach our goals.

DFB.de: Why are you so strong at the moment?

Goeßling: We’re on a good run of form and I believe it’s down to the fact that we aren’t tired yet. We want to achieve more. We are having fun at the minute and playing well, which is our biggest strength. The team spirit here is unbelievable. It was a strenuous and long year for us but a joyous one.

DFB.de: There are two league games left ahead of the winter break…

Goeßling: ... and we want to pick up more points. We don’t want to blot our copybook against Freiburg or Hoffenheim and would like to pick up six more points. If we do that we can certainly have a happy Christmas. I’m happy with our position in the table.

DFB.de: How much of an influence will the victory against Frankfurt have on the team?

Goeßling: It certainly will give us more confidence. We won’t let the euphoria and joy cloud our minds though, we won’t take our eyes off the ball in the upcoming games – that would be a huge error. Shortly before Christmas we also have the DFB Cup quarter-final against SC Sand. We will need to remain focussed. Our aim is to progress as far as possible in all three competitions: We have done well in the Champions League and are on course in the DFB Cup and Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga.

DFB.de: Do you think it’s a two horse race between yourselves and FC Bayern München for the title? Are Frankfurt and Potsdam already too far adrift?

Goeßling: Certainly not. It’s too early to write off Frankfurt and Turbine Potsdam. There is still a long way to go this season – it’s going to be open and exciting until the end. I believe that the four sides will be fighting for the title right up until the end of the season. The team who are the most consistent will win the league. Consistency is key.
