League leaders Bayern held at home to Schalke

Record champions FC Bayern München saw their run of seven straight wins come to an end after drawing with FC Schalke 04. The table toppers were held to a 1-1 draw by the Royal Blues on Bundesliga matchday 19.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim bounced back from their first defeat of the season last weekend and claimed a 4-0 home victory over 1. FSV Mainz 05 to jump into third place. Hertha BSC claimed collected their first win of the new year, securing a 1-0 home victory over FC Ingolstadt.

1. FC Köln continue to find themselves in the upper regions of the standings after a 1-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg. Finally, Borussia Mönchengladbach bagged three points against SC Freiburg in a 3-0 victory.

Rudy assists Hoffenheim’s opener.

Holger Badstuber returned to the Allianz Arena for the first time wearing blue colours and found himself in the starting line-up against his former team mates. Just nine minutes into the game, he had to witness Robert Lewandowski’s perfectly timed chip to give Bayern the lead. However, Schalke had an immediate response as Naldo fired home from a free-kick to level after 13 minutes. The rest of the match offered chances for both teams to score the winner, but 75.000 spectators and DFB Team assistant coach Thomas Schneider saw the game conclude in a 1-1 draw.

Germany international Sebastian Rudy assisted Mark Uth’s opener for Hoffenheim just five minutes into the game. A close contest developed and the visitors created clear chances to level, but Hoffenheim scored the goals. Marco Terrazzino doubled the advantage with less than ten minutes left to play and a double strike by former Mainz striker Adam Szalai saw Hoffenheim secure a clear victory.

Herrmann scores on comeback.

The spectators inside the Olympic Stadium in Berlin were presented with the only goal of the match just 60 seconds after kick-off. Japan’s Genki Haraguchi was left unmarked after a corner from the right side and found the back of the net with a precise finish. The game didn’t have much more to offer after that, with Ingolstadt looking for the equaliser but unable to break the deadlock.

Köln had advantages against Wolfsburg in the Rhein-Energi-Stadion, but required a late penalty from Anthony Modeste to secure the victory. The victory sees Köln extend their unbeaten run at home, which started back in April 2016.

The first half between Gladbach and Freiburg offered few highlights, but the hosts stepped up the pace in the second half and found themselves on the road to victory after skipper Lars Stindl gave them the lead after 72 minutes. Raffael followed suit with his goal six minutes later and Patrick Herrmann, making his comeback from injury, grabbed the final goal in stoppage time.
