Late drama in Kaiserslautern

Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Kaiserslautern played out an entertaining 1-1 in Kaiserslauten earlier. Joel Pohjanpalo gave the visitors the lead with less than fifteen minutes to go but a last second equaliser from Marcel Gaus rescued a point for the home team. The point keeps Kaiserslautern in touching distance with the early pace setters, although Ingolstadt could increase their lead at the top with victory over Heidenheim tomorrow.

The 36,282 spectators witnessed a slow burning fixture. Kaiserslauten started better but neither side could create a clear chance in the opening 45 minutes. The second half started the same way but came to life when Joel Pohjanpalo opened the scoring for the visitors. This sparked a frantic ending to the game with both sides coming close to scoring. Kaiserslautern grabbed a hugely deserved equaliser in injury time thanks to Marcel Gaus’ goal.

St. Pauli fall to defeat against Karlsruhe

St Pauli remain just two points ahead of bottom club 1860 München after losing 4-0 at home to Karlsruher SC. The damage was done in the first half when goals from Hiroki Yamada (18’) and Rouwen Hennings (31’) gave the visitors an insurmountable lead.

St Pauli made the better start in front of 28,029 spectators in the Millerntor-Stadion but they couldn’t find the break through, which proved costly as the visitors made the most of some poor defending to gain a 2-0 half time advantage. The home side continued to press in the second half and had the chances to gain a foothold in the game, but defensive frailties surfaced again. Late goals from Selcuk Alibaz (80’) and a second from Yamada (89’) completed an emphatic victory for the visitors, who now lie in sixth place.
