Late drama as Portugal progress

Portugal become the third team to reach the quarterfinals in France. Ricardo Quaresma’s late goal in extra time saw Portugal beat Croatia and book their place in the last eight, where they will face Poland on Thursday at 21:00 CEST in Marseille.

With 116 minutes on the clock: 116 minutes of cautious football and not a single shot on target, the last of today’s round of 16 fixtures threatened to go down as the dullest game of the tournament so far, even with the introduction of 18-year-old Renato Sanches injecting a little more pace into proceedings. But the players redeemed themselves in the eyes of the neutrals after almost two hours of unentertaining football, albeit at the expense of Croatia.

A game of one minute

The 117th minute began with a cross from Dario Srna, aimed towards Ivan Perisic who was unfortunate to see his header hit the post. Perisic barely had time to remove his hands from his head before Nani had played in Ronaldo at the other end of the pitch: Ronaldo provided the first shot on target in the game, which Subasic parried out to Quaresma who nodded in the winner from less than a yard away with the second shot on target.
