Lahm: "Focus turns to the double on Monday"

World Champion Philipp Lahm lifted the Meisterschale into the Munich skies for an historic fourth consecutive season on Saturday. After securing a 3-1 home win over Hannover 96 on matchday 34 in the Bundesliga, the record champions were able to celebrate a 26th German league title.

During a post-match interview, the Bayern captain spoke about winning the Bundesliga, the season finale, coach Pep Guardiola and the all-important cup final against Dortmund.

Question: Mr. Lahm, do the celebrations almost become routine after winning a fourth German Championship in a row?

Philipp Lahm: No, it’s always something special. We were fortunate enough to already be able to celebrate last week after our win in Ingolstadt. To now be able to party here with at home with the fans, the Bayern legends and the women’s team is always a great occasion.

Question: Do the team have to hold back with the celebrations a little with a cup final coming up on Saturday?

Lahm: No, we’re going to enjoy ourselves now and party on the balcony too. Our focus turns to the double on Monday. We will have to be fully concentrated and prepare well as it won’t be an easy task.

Question: Did you notice anything different about your coach Pep Guardiola during his final home game in Munich?

Lahm: No, he was his usual self. He prepared us well as always. He was determined to win the final game and break the record of conceding the fewest goals in a season. That was very important to him and he reiterated it during the half-time team talk.

Question: What can you say about Robert Lewandowski reaching 30 goals?

Lahm: Simply sensational. Obviously you require a good team around you to get there in the first place, but still. We’re not talking about a few years since this has been done; it’s been decades. It’s an incredible achievement.

Question: How significant is the cup final in terms of the overall season?

Lahm: It’s always an important game, after all, there’s a title on the line. When the opportunity is there, you want to win the double. It’s by no means a given either; we didn’t win it last year. That’s why it’s so special. Plus, the final sees the two best teams in Germany go head-to-head. Dortmund have been great competitors this season and won’t make life easy for us.

Question: Will the recent results for both clubs play a part in what we can expect in Berlin or is it a completely different ball game.

Lahm: It’s a whole new game, a final. It’s anyone’s for the taking when two very good sides come up against each other. That’s why there’s no favourite. We will need to improve our performance if we want to win the double.

Question: Now that it’s over, how would you analyse the Bundesliga campaign?

Lahm: I think it’s been a great and very interesting season. Dortmund were always on our tails, putting us under pressure. That’s different to what we’ve experienced in recent years. We had to wait until the penultimate matchday to claim the title this time. The pressure to keep on winning was always there. That’s why I think it’s been a great season.
