Lahm announces retirement from international football

Philipp Lahm has announced his retirement from international football. The captain of the World Cup-winning Germany team informed DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach of his decision by phone this morning at 9.40 am. Lahm bows out of the national team at the age of 30 after making 113 appearances and lifting the World Cup trophy in Brazil. The FC Bayern player made his senior international debut on 18 February 2004 in Germany's 2–1 victory over Croatia.

DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach: "Philipp called me this morning and informed me personally of his decision. In the course of our conversation I quickly realised trying to talk him out of it would be futile. In his ten years with the national team he has not only been an outstanding player but always an absolute role model. I thanked him for all he has achieved on behalf of the DFB."

General Secretary Helmut Sandrock: "Philipp is not only an outstanding player but a huge personality on and off the pitch. In our talks and negotiations with the national team I always found him utterly honest, reliable and fair."

Oliver Bierhoff: "Philipp is an absolute role model as a player and person. We could always rely on him 100 percent in the national team, on the field and as captain. He is a big personality and happily takes on a great deal of responsibility. I have immense respect for Philipp’s career and his decision. What remains is for all of us to say a big thank you."

National team coach Joachim Löw: "When I joined the national team set-up as assistant coach in July 2004, Philipp Lahm had only made a handful of appearances and was still at the start of his national team career. But even back then I recognised his enormous potential, desire, openness and willingness to try and improve all the time. I've worked with him in the national team for ten years. He’s the kind of player you always want as a coach. Philipp is a model professional who puts the team's success above everything else. His intelligence and versatility as a player have allowed him to play at the highest level on the international stage for many years. He is a world-class player, as he again demonstrated over the last few weeks in Brazil. He crowned his outstanding career by winning the World Cup title. Philipp was always a significant and extremely important contact for me, and I discussed our ideas with him. He can be proud of his career because he is a magnificent player with a big heart, passion and character, who has achieved a lot for the DFB. Philipp will continue to be a vital part of the FC Bayern team. I wish him all the best both professionally and privately. Thank you, Philipp!"
