Kruse quadruple leaves Werder on course for Europe

Werder Bremen had four-goal hero Max Kruse to thank on Machday 30 as the German’s incredible afternoon in front of goal helped move his side up to sixth in the league. Despite trailing to FC Ingolstadt twice, Alex Nouri’s side turned things around to run out 4-2 winners. The battle to survive the drop intensified further for Augsburg after their 3-1 defeat to Frankfurt, while Mainz picked up a battling point against the champions-elect Bayern Munich to climb to 13th against the champions-elect Bayern Munich.

Darmstadt kept their slim hopes of survival alive following their first away points of the season with a 2-1 win in Hamburg - who themselves stay in danger at the bottom of the table. Wolfsburg also remain in a precarious position after a 1-0 defeat in the capital against Hertha BSC, and sit one place above Hamburger SV in 14th with the same number of points.

Bremen make a comeback in Ingolstadt

Goals from Dario Lezcano (32’) and Pascal Groß (62’) gave Ingolstadt a glimpse of hope of staying up in the Bundesliga, had they seen their lead through to the final whistle and secured the three points. The Paraguayan striker Lezcano scored in front of his own crowd to give FCI the lead, and Groß converted from the spot after a penalty was awarded to them shortly before the break. But Max Kruse singlehandedly ruined the party for the hosts in spectacular fashion: The 29-year-old brought Bremen level both times (45+1’ penalty, 81’), and then took the game into his own hands in the closing stages, by scoring goals three (87’) and four (90+4’) for Bremen too. Werder are now enjoying a run of nine consecutive games undefeated.

Netherlands’ Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (9’) took his chance well to give Augsburg the lead in Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena. The guests showed a lot of sprit, but were unable to produce many chances against the hosts’ stable defence, who could have made their chances count for more. A hectic end to the game saw Marco Fabian (78’, 87’) turn the game around in Frankfurt’s favour, before Ante Rebic ultimately (90+1’) put the result beyond doubt.

Without world champion Manuel Neuer in net, Bayern München went a goal down in front of their own crowd early on: Vidal conceded the ball to Mainz’s Bojan Krkic (3’) in his own box, and the Spaniard made good on his opportunity, sliding the ball past replacement goalkeeper Sven Ulreich. Following Arjen Robben’s 16th minute equaliser, the guests struck back. Daniel Brosinski (40’) was the goalscorer, converting from the penalty spot after Yoshinori Muto was brought down by Joshua Kimmich, to make it 2-1. Thiago’s 73rd minute low strike ensured that FC Bayern would salvage a point from the game.

Darmstadt shock Hamburg

In the battle of the two worst defences it took until after half-time for the deadlock to be broken. Aytac Sulu and Felix Platte gave the visitors a two-goal lead and Fabian Holland’s late own goal was a mere consolation.

Hertha’s strong home record continued on Saturday, though they were fortunate to beat a Wolfsburg side who wasted a host of chances. Captain Vedad Ibisevic settled the game with a header from Alex Esswein’s cross just before the hour mark.

Reus scores again in a BVB victory over Gladbach.

Borussia Dortmund claimed third place in the table thanks to the three goals they put past Borussia Mönchengladbach. BVB emerged as the victors in an entertaining game that was played in Gladbach’s Borussia-Park on Saturday evening before 54,014 spectators. Germany international Marco Reus (10’) opened the scoring, before Lars Stindl leveled two minutes before half-time. The second-half started with a Marcel Schmelzer own goal (48’), but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got his 27th of the campaign (59’) before Raphael Guerreiro (87’) stole the three points for his side, BVB, at the death.
