Kruse fires Gladbach to victory

Borussia Mönchengladbach strengthened their grip on automatic qualification to next year’s Champions League today with a 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg. They overtook rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen; the result also meant that FC Bayern München are mathematically confirmed as Bundesliga champions for the 2014/15 season.

Germany international Max Kruse grabbed the winner in injury time to give Gladbach their eighth home win in a row. They are now unbeaten in ten in the league and are two points clear of Leverkusen with four games to go. They are now guaranteed at least a Champions League play-off spot.

Schürrle back in the squad

Martin Stranzl and Tony Jantschke were missing for the hosts; De Bruyne returned to the starting line-up for the Wolves but André Schürrle and Vieirinha were only fit enough for a place on the bench.

Big chance for Patrick Herrmann

Gladbach started strongly and could have taken the lead through Granit Xhaka after 12 minutes, but Swiss compatriot Diego Benaglio was equal to his effort. Patrick Herrmann had a big chance to give Favre’s men the lead after 21 minutes. He was slow to anticipate Max Kruse’s cross and although the goalkeeper was out of position, was unable to capitalise.

Wolfsburg stepped it up a gear soon after but failed to create too many clear chances before the break. Long range efforts from de Bruyne (38’) and Ricardo Rodriguez (45’) were the best they had to offer.

The hosts increased the pressure on Hecking’s side after the break. Wendt and Kruse had chances to open the scoring before the latter fired home after tidy work from Fabian Johnson in injury time.
