Kroos wins in Barcelona, Khedira misses out

Sami Khedira missed his first chance to pick up a title with Juventus on Sunday night as his side were beaten 3-2 by Lazio in the Rome.

It was a second straight defeat for “The Old Lady” in the Supercup following last year’s loss to AC Milan.

Juventus picked up the double last season as well as reaching the Champions League final. Lazio joined them in the supercup after finishing runners-up in last year’s Italian Cup and forged a two-goal lead midway through the second half, thanks to two strikes from former Dortmund player Ciro Immobile.

Juventus rallied late on and looked to have forced extra time through Paulo Dybala’s double late on. But Lazio won it in injury time as substitute Alessandro Murgia struck a late winner.

Kroos and Real Madrid beat Barca in the Super Cup first-leg

Even this early in the season, World Cup champion Toni Kroos and his team, Champions League winners Real Madrid, are looking likely to soon win their second trophy of the year. The Spanish champions beat FC Barcelona 3-1 last night in the first-leg of the Super Cup. Last week Madrid had already claimed the European Super Cup when they beat Europa League winners Manchester United 2-1.

Defender Gerard Piqué’s own goal gave Real the lead, before Lionel Messi levelled the scores from the spot, that being his first Clasico goal in the Camp Nou since October 2012. However Cristiano Ronaldo hit back straightaway, before being sent off two minutes later for a second yellow. Marco Asensio sealed the result as he scored Real’s third in the 90th minute.

Zidane starts Ronaldo on the bench

Real Head Coach Zinédine Zidane had left Ronaldo on the bench due to his lack of training time. After his involvement in the Confederations Cup, the Portuguese star had only recently returned to training. On the other side, Gerard Deulofeu started for Barca in place of Neymar, following his 222 million euro transfer to PSG.

Without the suspended Luka Modric, the visitors, who still had Kroos in midfield, often looked short of ideas. Similarly, Barcelona struggled to create chances in their first game without Neymar. In keeping with this first half trend, the first goal was scored for Real, courtesy of an own goal, as Piqué steered a Marcelo cross past his keeper, German international Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and into his own net.

Second-leg on Wednesday

Barca then responded and began to play at a much higher tempo, and equalised through Messi. The substitute Ronaldo restored Real’s lead with a spectacular goal from the edge of the penalty area. However Ronaldo’s joy did not last long, as he was shown a second yellow by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea minutes later, having received his first card for removing his shirt during his goal celebrations.

On Wednesday the second-leg kicks-off at 23:00 in the Bernabéu. In front of their home crowd, Real will be looking to win their 10th Supercup, and their first since 2012.
