Kroos wins Club World Cup with Real Madrid

Real Madrid are the FIFA Club World Cup champions, thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick. The Champions League winners, with World Champion Toni Kroos in their side, beat the Japanese side Kashima Antlers 4-2 after extra-time in Yokohama.

”I am always expected to deliver something special,” said Ronaldo. “But for me, it was a very special week after I won the Ballon D’Or as well. It’s the perfect end to the year.” Ronaldo (60’ pen, 98’, 104’) and Karim Benzema (9’) were on the scoresheet for the Spanish giants, who picked up their fifth Club World after triumphing in 1960, 1998, 2002 and 2014.

European champion Ronaldo rescued his side from defeat against the tricky Japanese opponents and was subbed off in the 112th minute. Gaku Shibasaki (44’, 52’) netted a brace to initially give Kashim Antlers a 2-1 lead. Antlers player Yuma Suzuki had a great chance to make it 3-3 in the 101st minute, but his header hit the crossbar.
