Kroos and Trapp win on opening matchday

Whilst Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski got off to sluggish starts, Toni Kroos won comfortably on the opening day of Champions League action. With Schweinsteiger suffering a 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on his Champions League debut for his new side Manchester United and Podolski's Galatasaray slumping to a 2-0 home loss against Atletico Madrid, Kroos at least had something to cheer as Real Madrid beat Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0.

Elsewhere, former Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp laboured to a lacklustre home 2-0 win over Malmö FF with Paris Saint-Germain, Mönchengladbach's group-stage opponents Juventus won 2-1 away at Manchester City, and Benfica overcame Champions League debutants FC Astana 2-0.

Manchester United throw away lead and lose Luke Shaw through injury

Schweinsteiger played the full 90 minutes and his side took the lead late in the first half when Memphis Depay scored on his return to his former club, but they were pegged back in first-half injury time when Hector Moreno headed in from a corner. The turnaround was complete in the second half when Luciano Narsingh scored a 57th-minute winner, but the match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who suffered a broken leg after a challenge with goalscorer Moreno.

With World Cup winner Toni Kroos in the starting eleven, Real Madrid struggled at first with their disruptive Ukrainian opponents, but they eventually made the breakthrough courtesy of striker Karim Benzema following an error from goalkeeper Andrij Pjatow. Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo then completed a hat trick with two penalties and a header from close range, and in scoring his 80th Champions League goal, he went back above Lionel Messi as the competition's all-time top goalscorer.

Podolski unlucky with Galatasaray

Kroos' international teammate Podolski didn't enjoy such a successful evening with Galatasaray. The visitors from Madrid won 2-0 with a brace from France international Antoine Griezmann, and despite a good scoring chance in the second half, Podolski was unable to get on the scoresheet.

Goalkeeper Trapp had a fairly quiet evening with PSG as captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic took on his former side Malmö FF. New signing Angel di Maria scored his first goal for the club to give them an early lead, whilst Edinson Cavani secured the three points with a second-half goal.

Alvaro Morata was the match-winner for last season's finalists Juventus in Manchester. After going behind to an unfortunate own goal from Giorgio Chiellini, the Spanish striker scored the winner following former Bundesliga player Mario Mandzukic's equaliser. Benfica had to be patient against FC Astana, but second-half goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Konstantinos Mitroglou eventually proved to be enough for the favourites.
