Kroos and Real struggle in opener

World Cup winner Toni Kroos and Real Madrid got off to a false start to the new La Liga season. Despite clear dominance during the game, Real failed to overcome Sporting Gijón in a 0-0 draw which Kroos played the entire game.

“We weren’t accurate enough with our passing and finishing,” said Real’s coach Rafael Benitez, who succeeded Carlo Ancelotti in the job. “We will improve, I’m optimistic.”

Ter Stegen on bench for Barca – Mustafi starts in draw

La Liga winners and European Champions Barcelona began the defence of their title on Sunday against bogey team Athletic Bilbao without Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. A week and a half after losing 4-0 in the first leg of the Supercopa to the Basques, Barca won 1-0 this time round.

Shkodran Mustafi had already experienced disappointment with Valencia on Saturday evening. Sandwiched between their Champions League playoff fixtures, the World Cup winner took part in a 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano. Mustafi completed the match in defence, and there was also an appearance for former U21 international Patrick Ebert with Rayo.
