Kramer: “We have to stay fully focused”

Things are getting serious for the Germany under-19 side at the European under-19 Championships in Georgia as they face Bulgaria this evening at 18:00 CEST in what is perhaps the decisive group fixture. If they win, the Germany under-19s will still be in the running to qualify for the semi-finals. Bulgaria started the tournament with a 2-0 loss against England.

Germany under-19 coach Frank Kramer says they have no reason to underestimate their opponent. “Bulgaria were, alongside France, one of the favourites to win the tournament during qualification. They are a very physically strong team who keep tight at the back,” says Kramer, as he goes on to warn about their attack. “They have a lot of good players who are very forceful and have the ability to convert goals up top. They are good at set-pieces. We have to stay fully focused.”

Efficiency is the key to victory

The coaching staff have already prepared suitable tactics for the team ahead of facing Bulgaria. The most important things will be to implement their game plan, avoid mistakes and winning the second ball. “Tonight, efficiency will be the key to victory. We have to be quicker than we were against the Netherlands, both at the back and going forward,” explained Kramer.

The Germany under-19 side know exactly what went wrong in the 4-1 loss to the Netherlands. “We created good chances, but we didn’t make the most of them. The opponents did and proved to us why you can’t waste opportunities at this level of football.”
