Köln end Ingolstadt's incredible run of away form

FC Ingolstadt only managed to record a 1-1 draw in Cologne on Friday night, so there record breaking run of form on the road is over. Die Schanzer had won each of their first three top-tier away matches 1-0 but their excellent sequence ended against 1. FC Köln. Anthony Modeste (10’) put the hosts in front, in what was their 750th Bundesliga home match, but Marvin Matip (21’) crowned his 30th birthday by netting the equaliser.

The hosts almost took the lead after two minutes but Yuya Osako’s effprt from a Marcel Risse cross was cleared off the line by FCI defender Tobias Levels. Ingolstadt almost went in front thanks to Markus Suttner (9’) but Timo Horn was more than a match to his effort. Köln took the lead a little over 60 seconds later when Modeste’s powerful header flew past Ramazan Özcan and into the back of the net.

Matip levels from a corner

The lead didn’t last long though as Matip nodded home to make it 1-1 moments later. The game plateaued after the initial excitement, with Köln seeing more of the ball but failing to break down a resolute Ingolstadt defence. Chances were at a premium, especially after the break.

With the final whistle approaching, the home side came close to snatching all three points but Osako’s 83rd minute free header was kept out by a stunning reflex save from Özcan. Despite the newly promoted side’s winning sequence coming to an end, they remain unbeaten on the road in the Bundesliga.
