Köln celebrate first derby win in seven years

1 FC Köln have many reasons to celebrate on matchdy five of the Bundesliga. Not only did they beat local rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 in the Rhine Derby, but they also find themselves fourth in the league this evening. For the Fohlenelf it was a fifth consecutive league defeat.

FC Bayern München returned to the top of the table, at least temporarily, following a 3-0 win against newly-promoted side SV Darmstadt 98. The reigning champions continue their 100% record this season. Four points behind the Munich side are VfL Wolfsburg in third after beating Hertha BSC 2-0 at home. FC Ingolstadt are fifth in the league after securing a 1-0 win away at Werder Bremen thanks to an injury-time penalty, whilst Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt played out a 0-0 draw.

Frenchman Anthony Modeste clinched the winner for Köln at the RheinEnergieStadion with a clinical header midway through the second half, in what was Effzeh’s first derby win since October 2008.

Vidal and Coman both bag first goals

Bayern Munich found it difficult to break through the Lilywhites’ compact defence at the Böllenfalltor stadium during the opening 20 minutes until Arturo Vidal scored from long range to give the record champions the lead. Two quick goals from Frenchman Kingsley Coman and Sebastian Rode in the second half sealed a comfortable win.

Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking’s second-half substitution, bringing on Bas Dost for Niklas Bendtner, proved decisive as the Dutchman bagged both goals for the Wolfs to claim the three points. Dost scored just five minutes after coming on, before doubling his tally with a late penalty after Julian Draxler was fouled in the box.

The match in Bremen looked set to end in a 0-0 draw before Assani Lukimya gave away a needless penalty in injury time. Moritz Hartmann converted the spot kick to secure their second away win of the season. Philipp Bargfrede saw red moments later after a reckless challenge.
