Köln beaten 2-1 in Freiburg

Anthony Modeste bagged his 16th of the season on matchday 20 but it wasn’t enough to inspire 1. FC Köln to victory in Freiburg. They now haven’t won in Breisgau for over 20 years. A win for the Billy Goats today could have seen them climb as high as third, but it wasn’t to be.

Vincenzo Grifo opened the scoring for the hosts after 32 minutes but Modeste equalised soon after (39’). The winner was scored by Maximilian Philipp with just 13 left on the clock.

The opening 10 minutes were cagey, with neither side willing to venture too far forward. However, it was the visitors, who gave a debut to Neven Subotic and a 100th Bundesliga appearance to Leonardo Bittencourt, who looked livelier, despite the fact that key players Timo Horn, Matthias Lehmann and Marcel Risse were missing.

However, Christian Streich’s Freiburg side took the lead against the run of play as Grifo’s deflected effort flew over the keeper and over the line. FC had to make a change soon after, with the injured Marco Höger being replaced by Christian Clemens. With just over five minutes left of the first half they got back on terms thanks to Modeste’s poacher’s effort from inside the six-yard box. The winner came in the closing stages of the game, with Philipp tapping home after Thomas Kessler failed to deal with a Grifo free kick.
