Köln and Schalke share the spoils

Anthony Modeste secured 1. FC Köln a vital point in their bid to return to the European stage for the first time in 25 years, as the striker bagged the 1-1 equaliser against FC Schalke 04 on Bundesliga matchday 21. It was his 17th goal of the season and keeps Köln in contention for a Europa League spot as they sit in seventh place. Köln, still unbeaten at home, are looking to return to the international stage for the first time since 1992. Schalke remained unbeaten in their fifth straight game but continue to trail Köln by seven points.

Alessandro Schöpf had given Schalke the lead just two minutes into the game, but Modeste levelled before the break, equalling Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the league’s top goalscorer.

Perfect start for Schalke

Schalke got off to a flying start just three days after their 3-0 win at PAOK Saloniki in the Europa League. 65 seconds were played when Schöpf met a cross from Daniel Caligiuri to give the visitors the lead. Köln looked stunned as Schalke continued to control the action. Leon Goretzka nearly doubled the advantage after 33 minutes when his attempt struck the woodwork.

Köln suddenly found themselves in more dangerous positions towards the end of the first half and Modeste levelled with a strike from the edge of the area. The second half started with Köln looking to apply pressure, but both let mistakes slip in during a fairly low key affair in the second 45 minutes.
