Klose now a Firtz Walter Foundation ambassador

World Cup winner Miroslav Klose is now an ambassador for the Fritz Walter Foundation. The decision was made by a combination of representatives of the Rheinland-Pfalz region, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and the Deutschen Fußball-Bund (DFB). Klose was welcomed to the role by Roger Lewentz, who represented the foundation, and Stefan Kuntz, a board member at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, in Mainz on Thursday. The striker was on the city as his Lazio lost 3-0 to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in a friendly the previous day.

Miroslav Klose has felt connected to the FCK and DFB legend Walter for a long time. “Fritz Walter sent me flowers and a bottle of wine after I scored my first goal for Kaiserslautern. He was there with me throughout my career. My whole family have fantastic memories of him and we’ll never forget him,” explained the striker after Walter passed away in 2002.

"Klose is an appealing figure"

Roger Lewentz, Rheinland-Pflaz’s sports minister and chairman of the Fritz Walter Foundation, honoured Klose for his services to German football. “We’re delighted that Miro Klose is now an ambassador for the foundation. He achieved great things with the national team. He’s an appealing figure and one of the most successful players ever,” explained Lewentz. The 37-year-old World Cup record scorer is a popular figure across the country and achieved greatness last year when he helped Die Mannschaft lift the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Stefan Kuntz, who won the European Championship in 1996, added: “Miro took his first steps in the football world in the region and he is an important figure here, as is Fritz Walter. He would be happy with this news, for sure.” Walter Desch, who represents the DFB at the foundation, said: "I have a lot of respect for Miro’s performances and it’s great that he got a World Cup winner’s medal to cap off a fantastic career. It’s great to have another illustrious name on board.”
