Kleindienst to miss U20 World Cup, Köpke called up as replacement

Tim Kleindienst suffered a ligament tear in training on Thursday afternoon and has therefore had to pull out from the U20 World Cup in New Zealand. The attacker from Energie Cottbus will be treated by DFB doctors over the next few days until his came make his trip home. To replace Kleindienst, Germany manager Frank Wormuth has called up Pascal Köpke from SpVgg Unterhaching.

“It’s a shame that Tim has to miss out, he felt good and was part of my plans”, said Wormuth. “We hope that Pascal will be a good replacement.” Once FIFA have confirmed the replacement call up, Köpke will fly to New Zealand on Friday afternoon, where he is expected to join the team on Sunday.

“I’m crazily exciting to still be a part of this World Cup bid, it will be a special highlight for me”, said the 19 year old Köpke, whose father Andreas won the European Championship with the national team in 1996 and has been working as goalkeeper coach for the national team since 2004. Germany begin their campaign against Fiji on 1st June (CEST).
