Kimmich scores twice as Bayern rout Rostov

Record German champions Bayern München got their new Champions League campaign off to a flying start on Tuesday night. Joshua Kimmich’s new-found goalscoring touch made another appearance in a 5-0 win over Russian side FC Rostov, as he netted his first and second UCL goals. Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller and Juan Bernat were also on the scoresheet for Bayern.

70,000 fans saw FCB playing play a waiting game for the first half an hour or so at the Allianz Arena. Rostov, who secured a first-ever Champions League qualification by knocking out Anderlecht and Ajax, proved to be difficult to break down, and looked to catch the hosts out on the counter, although they rarely threatened Manuel Neuer’s goal.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 28th minute when Lewandowski was fouled in the box, and the Pole picked himself up to convert the resulting penalty. Thomas Müller doubled FCB’s advantage on the stroke of half time, before another Germany international got in on the action during the second 45. After scoring his first international goal and then his first Bundesliga goal in the last few weeks, Joshua Kimmich went on to bag his maiden Champions League goal in the meeting with Rostov. In fact, he scored twice to make it 3-0 then 4-0, before Juan Bernat rounded off the scoring. Bayern lead the way in Group D thanks to their big win, level on points with Atlético Madrid, who recorded a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

Man City vs. Gladbach rained off

Borussia Mönchengladbach have to wait until Wednesday night to kick off their Champions League campaign. The Foals were schedule to play this evening, but torrential rain in Manchester saw their meeting with Pep Guardiola’s City side postponed until the same time tomorrow.
