Kimmich denies HSV a point

Germany international Joshua Kimmich ensured FC Bayern München's perfect start to the season continued by bagging a late goal to earn the Bundesliga leaders a 1-0 win at Hamburger SV on matchday 5. Bayer 04 Leverkusen also earned a late victory in their 3-2 away match triumph at 1. FSV Mainz 05. Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC shared the points with a 3-3 draw, while Borussia Mönchengladbach recorded a 2-0 win against FC Ingolstadt. Finally, Augsburg beat Darmstadt 1-0.

Before matchday 5, Hamburger SV had managed just three points from their last 13 encounters with the record champions, but they showed a good performance for long spells in this game. Time and time again they managed to create danger against the reigning champions, who required a late goal from Joshua Kimmich to keep their perfect run this season going.

Chicharito bags a hat-trick

Yunus Malli opened the scoring in Mainz, firing the hosts into the lead after 30 minutes, only for Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez to reply almost immediately. Just two minutes later though, Stefan Bell restored Mainz’s lead in his 100th Bundesliga appearance for the club. Chicharito levelled tge scores again after the break, before adding a stoppage time third to give Leverkusen a 3-2 away victory.

Gladbach struggled for long spells in their meeting with Ingolstadt. The Bavarians defended cleverly at Borussia-Park, but skipper Lars Stindl finally broke the deadlock just before the break. The lead didn't seem to give Gladbach the expected assurance, as Ingolstadt continued to fight back. Oscar Wendt eventually killed off the game, giving Gladbach their tenth consecutive home victory in the league.

Spectacle in Frankfurt

Following two victories against Schalke and Leverkusen, Frankfurt were aiming for a third straight home win against Hertha BSC. However, the visitors took the lead in the 19th minute via Vedad Ibisevic's converted penalty. It wasn’t a lead Hertha would hold until half-time though, with Marco Fabián and Alex Meier firing the hosts in front. Ibisevic then equalised for Hertha after the break, only for Alexander Esswein to put the visitors into the lead once again after 65 minutes. The spoils were ultimately shared though, with Michael Hector’s last-second header denying Berlin a fourth win of the season.

Augsburg looked the dominant side against Darmstadt but struggled to find a breakthrough. They were helped when the visitors were reduced to ten men at the end of the first half following a second yellow card for Leon Guwara. Augsburg took immediate advantage after the restart through Alfred Finnbogason, and ultimately held out for their first home win of the season.
