World Cup winner Sami Khedira of title winning Real Madrid picked up a concussion during a collision in the team’s cup game against the Spanish third-tier side UE Cornella. The midfielder was observed overnight in the Spanish clinic Sanitas La Moraleja. The club broke the news on their website on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old was trying to help Real Madrid qualify for the last 16 of the cup in their second-leg game on Tuesday when he went in hard for a header against one of the opposition and had to be substituted. Coach Carlo Ancelotti played down the injury straight after the game when he said that “he is doing well but will spend the night in the hospital.”
Real Madrid, who had already won the first-leg 4-1 and were confident of securing a place in the round of 16, achieved the result through two goals from the Colombian World Cup top goalscorer James Rodriguez, a goal from Isco and one from Khedira’s replacement Jesé. The scoring was then completed when Cornella scored an own goal.
Toni Kroos, along with superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, were rested following the victory in the first leg.
