Khedira scores in Juve victory

Barca and ter Stegen held to draw

FC Barcelona and Marc-André ter Stegen dropped two vital points in their Primera Division title race against record champions Real Madrid, as the Catalans were held to a 1-1 draw at Real Betis on matchday 20.

Alex Alegria’s goal after 75 minutes saw Betis take the lead, but Luis Suarez salvaged a point for Barca with his strike in the closing stages of the game. Ter Stegen required treatment midway through the second half, but was fine to continue and finish the game.

PSG held in Ligue 1 game of the week

German International Julian Draxler saw his PSG side miss out on a victory on Sunday evening after a 1-1 draw at home to league leaders AS Monaco at the Parc des Princes.

PSG striker Edinson Cavani gave his team the lead in the 81st minute from the penalty spot following a foul, only for the Monegasque visitors to equalise three minutes into injury time to rescue a point. Draxler came on in the 87th minute. His team mate Kevin Trapp was forced to leave the field in the 53rd minute because of an injury. He was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

PSG now have 46 points and sit third in the table, three points behind Sunday’s opponents Monaco, who top the table on goal difference from OGC Nice.

Antonio Rüdiger was also in the starting XI for AS Roma, who suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Sampdoria. Bruno Peres had given Roma go ahead after five minutes, but Dennis Praet levelled midway through the first half. Edin Dzeko’s goal saw the hosts retake the lead, before Patrick Schick found the back of the net to equalise once more in the 71st minute. Just two minutes later Sampdoria went in front for the first time in the game courtesy of a goal by Luis Muriel and held on for the win.

Germany international Sami Khedira and Juventus secured another victory on matchday 21 in Serie A and remain at the top of the table after a 2-0 win over Sassuolo.

Khedira featured in the starting line-up for Juve and saw team mate Gonzalo Higuain grab the opener nine minutes into the game. Around 15 minutes later Khedira scored himself, handing Juventus a 2-0 victory.

Schweinsteiger scores in FA Cup

Manchester United moved into the fifth round of the English FA Cup after a 4-0 win over second division Wigan Athletic. World cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger started his first game of the season for the Red Devils and scored the fourth goal in the 82nd minute. Maroaune Fellaini, Chris Smalling and former Dortmund player Henrik Mkhitaryan also got on the scoresheet for United.

Kroos helps Real extend lead at top of the table

World champion Toni Kroos helped Real Madrid extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table. Zinedine Zidane’s side comfortably beat Real Sociedad 3-0 on matchday 20. The Spanish table-toppers were certainly the winners of the weekend though after slip-ups from FC Barcelona (1-1 against Real Betis) and Sevilla (3-1 defeat at Espanyol). The gap between the record champions and their closest chasers is now four points but Real have a game in hand.

Mateo Kovacic’s strike after an assist from Cristiano Ronaldo gave the home side a half-time lead at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Ballon d’Or winner then doubled his team’s lead with an early second-half goal and his 13th of the season before Alvaro Morata made victory certain with an 82nd minute header. Real Sociedad had to play the final 15 minutes a man down after a second yellow card saw Inigo Martinez leave the field. Kroos, who featured for the entire 90 minutes, picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will therefore miss Madrid’s next league game at Celta Vigo.
