Khedira ruptures cruciate ligament

German national player Sami Khedira suffered a knee injury in Friday’s game against Italy at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan. The 26-year old Khedira ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee. "Sami needs surgical treatment. We are hopeful to have him back healthy once the World Cup starts", said German team doctor Hans-Willhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt.

Joachim Löw added: "That’s a bitter setback for Sami and for all of us." Löw, who had his 100th game as the German coach, continued to say: "Sami is a fighter, on and off the pitch. He’s always positive, which will help him in his recovery. I believe that he will be ready for the opening game in Brazil. We wish him all the best and we keep our fingers crossed for a successful surgery, so that he can start rehab right away."

The German team faces England this Tuesday at Wembley Stadium, but will be without the services of their captain Philipp Lahm, as well as goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and midfielder Mesut Özil. The team travels without these three players from Milan to London on Saturday. Per Mertesacker, who missed the Italy-game because of a flu, will rejoin the team in London.
