Kehl to host DFB-Pokal first-round draw

The DFB and ARD are to make the draws for the 2017/18 DFB Pokal in a new format. Each draw will now take place on the Sunday following each round of the cup at 18:00 CEST and will be done at the Deutsche Fuβballmuseum in Dortmund. Fans from various clubs in the competition will bear witness to a number of distinguished guests who will complete the draw in the multi-use arena.

The draw for the first round gets going as early as this Sunday at 17:50 CEST. Sebastian Kehl, DFB Pokal winner in 2012 with Borussia Dortmund, takes over as the man responsible for drawing each team’s name out of the hat. DFB President Reinhard Grindel will act as an assistant. The second round draw is set to take place on 20th August which will also incorporate the draw for the women’s DFB Pokal quarter-finals.

Family friendly, fan friendly

DFB media director Ralf Köttker said: “The new format allows us to respond to the wishes of many football fans and to further develop the way we complete the draws tougher with ARD. Instead of the draws taking place very late on after matches, the fans now have a set time that they can expect to hear who their club will be facing in the next round. Both fans and clubs respectively can now plan ahead and the programme will not be too late for children to watch it live. We are delighted that the ARD have implemented this family and fan-friendly concept and that Germany’s football fans will be given a greater insight into the Deutsche Fuβballmuseum.”

WDR sporting director Steffen Simon also added, “It is wonderful that the draws have found a new home in the Deutsche Fuβballmuseum. It will be a real highlight of the week and we are really looking forward to it.
