Kehl fires lucky BVB into semi-final

Sebastian Kehl’s 107th minute wonder strike was the difference between the two teams as Borussia Dortmund beat TSG Hoffenheim 3-2 after extra-time and progressed to the DFB Cup semi-final.

In front of 80,667 fans in Signal Iduna Park, Neven Subotic fired the hosts into the lead in the 19th minute. However, Hoffenheim equalised only two minutes later through Volland and then Firmino completely turned the game on its head, capitalising on a defensive slip and chipping the ball over Mitchell Langerak.

Dortmund started the second half brightly and deservedly pulled level in the 57th minute. Erik Durm whipped the ball in from the right and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got in front of his marker to head home. Both teams pushed for a winner and Hoffenheim spurned two fantastic chances to settle the tie in the dying stages.

The home side dominated the first period of extra time but still couldn’t find a way past the in-form Oliver Baumann. He was finally beaten by Kehl’s magnificent half volley from 25 metres out which was perfectly placed and crept just inside the post. Hoffenheim captain Andreas Beck had a brilliant chance to force the tie to penalties at the end of extra time but he was unable to keep his header down.
