Julian Draxler: "That wasn’t the result we had in mind"

It was another exciting week of action in the Bundesliga. A number of Germany internationals were involved this weekend and DFB.de has collected some quotes from some of them. Here’s what Julian Draxler, Benedikt Höwedes, Patrick Herrmann, Max Kruse, Mats Hummels, Jonas Hector and Thomas Müller had to say about the weekend’s fixtures.

Schalke 04 0-0 SC Freiburg

Julian Draxler: My body felt fine but I’m lacking match fitness. That’ll come back the more I play. It was nice to be back playing in front of the fans. There’s no question that I was hoping for a better result on my return. The result wasn’t the one we had in mind. We had a good phase after they missed the penalty but we failed to find the back of the net. It’s hard to explain why we’re finding things so hard at the moment. We have the quality but we aren’t dangerous in front of goal. We have to improve significantly if we want to win our next few games. We should stop talking about the Champions League. Everyone has to improve in order for us to pick up as many points as possible.

Benedikt Höwedes: A point is not enough. We desperately wanted to pick up three points today in front of our fans but we couldn’t do that. Everyone has to step up their game. We created chances at times in the second half but we wasted them because we were lacking the will and determination to score a goal. We didn’t deserve to win.. We have to concentrate on qualifying for the Europa League.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 Borussia Dortmund

Patrick Herrmann: We played brilliantly and deserved to win. Dortmund have an outstanding team but we didn’t allow them to have many chances and were very focussed in defence. The early goal obviously played into our hands because this meant that we could just play on the break. Our team is extremely dangerous on the counterattack and we were simply outstanding today.

Max Kruse: We have taken nine points from our last three matches, all against very difficult opposition. We were determined to win the game. We always want to force the opposition into mistakes and we did exactly that today in the opening minute.

Mats Hummels: It was clear from the first minute that we would probably be going home empty handed. It’s the first time in a while that we have played really badly. At 3-0 we opened the goal for them and invited them to score more. Everything went wrong for us in Gladbach.

1. FC Köln 3–2 TSG Hoffenheim

Jonas Hector on his goal: I dont’t think you can practice something like that. It just happens.

FC Bayern 3–0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Thomas Müller: We were definitely tired. It’s not like I woke up early this morning shouting: 'Hurrah, we have a game today at home against Frankfurt and all of a sudden you forget your body is tired. We managed to cast that aside though, it’s our job and if we play football properly, it all falls into place. But when the game gets underway and you’re in front of 70,000 fans, the sun is shining, what are you going to do? Of course you’re not going to just go home! (laughs)
