Julian Brandt: "I don’t practise free kicks"

After the games, we asked some youth and full national players about their games and individual performances. In focus today, Julian Brandt, Ilkay Gündogan, Jonas Hector and André Schürrle.

Werder Bremen 0-3 Bayer Leverkusen

Julian Brandt: I feel sorry for Werder. I saw quite a few of the games here in the stadium from their glory days. But of course, I’m happy. We got the win against Mainz but lost three games before that, so it was important to get the win against Werder, and we are now getting back to where we should be. I don’t practise free kicks, it’s not usually my job to take them. But I did yesterday and it paid off.

Jonathan Tah: It was a great game and we earned the win. It was also important to get the clean sheet. We concentrated and gave our all until the final whistle. We showed our good attitude and character. Everyone is important to the team and that’s what the coach always says. Considering the midweek fixtures we can be happy all in all. It could’ve been better but we’ve got a lot of points on the board. We must take confidence into the next game.

Dortmund 2-2 Darmstadt

Ilkay Gündogan: It was annoying that we didn’t take our chance to make it 2-1 against Hoffenheim. It was the same against Darmstadt. We know that we didn’t do what we said we would in the first halves.

Mats Hummels: We know that Darmstadt keep going right until the end and that it can be difficult. Their goal was an unchallenged volley from 13 yards when five or six players were around 20 yards out. That’s not defending. It’s a game that we would normally win comfortably. Darmstadt had extreme luck and with two shots in the game leave with a point. It happens.

Julian Weigl: We’re very disappointed. We fought back in the match and were delighted to go 2-1 up, but conceded in the last minute. It was a scrappy game. Darmstadt took every opportunity to waste time, delay the game and disrupt our tempo. It’s a shame that we didn’t manage to get the three points.

Hamburg 0-1 Schalke

Leon Goretzka: We showed passion and didn’t let Hamburg into the game. It was nervy at the end with the amount of added time there was. But we dominated the game. Because of the busy schedule we have tired legs, but we were never under threat. Overall we were the better team and we deserved the win.

Stuttgart 1-3 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Timo Werner: We started well but had a bad spell when we conceded the two goals, but in the second half we create lot more chances. It’s always difficult after the break to get back into the game in that situation. We must score more goals.

Timo Werner: We started well but had a bad spell when we conceded the two goals, but in the second half we create lot more chances. It’s always difficult after the break to get back into the game in that situation. We must score more goals.

Patrick Herrmann: It’s good that we have won two games in the row. We threw ourselves into the challenges and blocked every shot, so the win was deserved.

Köln 1-1 Ingolstadt

Jonas Hector: We knew that Ingolstadt would play a 4-3-3 system, and that if we controlled the midfield, we could create chances. That’s how we scored the goal. Unfortunately we didn’t create any further chances.

Wolfsburg 1-1 Hannover

André Schürrle: We were motivated from the start. We wanted to get an early goal but unfortunately we couldn’t do that. Over the 90 minutes we were clearly the better side and we deserved three points. We couldn’t take our chances and Hannover scored one goal from just two chances. After the injury break it was a lot more difficult for us to get into the game. We had it under control, didn’t let them have many chances and had most of the possession. It doesn’t help that Wednesday is just around the corner. We need to recover and move on.

Ron-Robert Zieler: The point is good for us and for our confidence. But it wasn’t a win so we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We showed a passion that would’ve won us other games. Wolfsburg had more chances but we held well. I am sure we will create another performance against Bremen. We must go again, and take the positives to the game against Werder.

Augsburg 1-3 Hoffenheim

Kevin Volland: It’s great to have finally got the win. If you look at the last three weeks, we’ve surrendered all of our points in the second half and not been able to come back from 1-0 down. We wanted to give everything that was left after the busy schedule. After taking the lead we defended well. In the second half we stayed compact and get going. We played good attacking football.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Hertha

Niklas Stark: we weren’t as good as our opponents in parts of the match, especially in the first half. We were better in the second half and dominated. We deserved to equalise but could’ve got more out of the game. We are happy with the point. Alex Meier is good. I was on him for the corner, but the ball came to him and he has an eye for goal, so he put it in. It’s difficult to defend against that.
