Joshua Kimmich: The numbers don’t lie

Joshua Kimmich has received a lot of praise for his performance in Germany’s third EURO 2016 group match against Northern Ireland. The 21-year-old from Bayern Munich played at right back. One of the biggest compliments came from the mouth of the man who filled this position before him. Benedikt Höwedes said about Kimmich: "He had a great game, and was the driving force going forward. It was the right decision from the manager, to choose the offensive option. He did a lot going forward, was dangerous, and was good on the flanks."

"Played extremely well, but should have scored more goals"

The facts to support Höwedes' Homage: Kimmich had possession 97 times, and touched the ball 235 times. Kimmich made 81 passes, with a success rate of 100 percent. Particularly impressive was his offensive work, with 13 touches in the penalty area, the right back was the best Germany player in this regard.

After the game, Kimmich did not have much to say about the match itself, but more about how it came about that he played: "The manager came and told me two days ago, that he was considering playing me on the right. He told me yesterday that I was playing.” However, he left it to others to assess his performance: "We played extremely well, but we just should have scored more goals."

Kimmich preferred to talk about the team, and he concurred with his teammate, Höwedes: "We all have to take up a lesser role, but that is okay because different players are important in different games. Football is a team sport, and so that is absolutely fine."
