Joachim Löw: "What counts is our attitude, not the starting line-up"

At a press conference with national coach Joachim Löw on the eve of Germany’s third group match against the USA in Recife on Thursday (live on ZDF from 18:00 CEST), the reunion with former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann was the main topic of interest. DFB.de summarised Löw’s most important comments.

JOACHIM LÖW ON...

... duelling with his friend Jürgen Klinsmann: Neither of us thinks about such things at all. The idea of a ‘showdown’ is simply a nice topic for the media. We have a relationship of mutual trust after working so successfully and closely together for two years, and we’ve met up occasionally since then. Our friendship won’t suffer in any way, no matter what the outcome of the match.

... the possibility of a non-aggression pact: Both of us want to win the game and will approach it professionally. There won’t be any arrangements, I can assure you of that. Our clear objective is to win this match. There is no pact to play for a draw.

... possible Round of 16 opponents: Of course, we’re following what happens in other groups, but what’s important is that we want to reach the Round of 16 as group winners. If we want to reach the final, we’ve got to beat every opponent, so there’s no point in working out and speculating who we would want to avoid.

... lessons learned from the Ghana match: We’ve got to be better at converting chances – that’s incredibly important in a tournament like this – and push forward quickly after winning possession. Against the USA we’ll need to be physically strong to counter their threat, as their team thrives on its aggression and physicality. We understand the mentality and ideas within their team. In any case, it will be vital that we demonstrate the right qualities on the pitch.

... the starting line-up for the USA match: All our players are fit and ready to go. We’ve got a range of different options, but what counts is our attitude, not the team selection. I’m at an advanced stage in my deliberations now, so I’m fairly certain of how we’ll line up.
