Joachim Löw: “We weren’t level-headed enough”

World Champions against Asian Champions, but no winner. Germany manager Joachim Löw was critical of his side’s performance after a 2-2 draw against Australia in Kaiserslautern to kick off Germany’s 2015. DFB.de gathered the post-match reaction from the Fritz-Walter-Stadion.

Joachim Löw: I wanted to accommodate for the personnel situation. The game was a little hectic in general. The first half was decent from our point of view, but we weren’t level headed enough in the second 45. We had some good chances at the start of it, but then all of a sudden we found ourselves behind. We couldn’t find the right structure in the second half and we didn’t get a foothold defensively throughout the whole game. We didn’t implement things the way we had hoped. We know that we have to win on Sunday in Georgia.

Sami Khedira: We weren’t able to put our ideas into practice. We know how serious the situation is in the EURO qualifiers, but we have no cause for concern.

Shkodran Mustafi: We can’t start looking too far ahead; we have to do our thing game by game and pick up the three points. That’s the target in Georgia.

Ilkay Gündogan: We played some good football at times, but there’s room for improvement. We started well and spread the ball about nicely, but we didn’t protect ourselves very well. We made it too easy for Australia.

Australia manager Ange Postecoglou: I’m very proud of my players and not just because of the result. We were always a threat going forward in the first half. It was a fantastic performance by us. It’s 10 o’clock in the morning in Australia. People will be going to work happy.
