Joachim Löw named honorary citizen of Schönau

Germany national team manager Joachim Löw was named as an honorary citizen in his hometown of Schönau im Schwarzwald on Friday, following the World Cup triumph in Brazil with the DFB-Team. The 2,300-capacity stadium in his hometown will also be renamed the Joachim-Löw Stadium. Both measures were unanimously approved by the local council.

Around 3,000 Schönau residents followed the ceremony on a big screen outside the school that Löw once attended. Mayor Peter Schelshorn acknowledged the Germany manager in the presence of his family and lots of familiar faces as he was handed the title of honorary citizen. The DFB coach also entered his signature in the town’s golden visitors’ book.

Löw: “Today is a special day for me”

“Today is a very special day for me in my hometown. It’s a massive honour for me. It’s great to look back on that magical summer, when we made so many people, or indeed a whole country, happy. Everywhere I go, I receive huge recognition for the work and for the manner in which we won the trophy,” said Löw, looking back on his greatest triumph. “It was a team effort and a team performance from team characters, who were unbelievably tough and ambitious – world-champion like. I saw pictures from Schönau in Brazil and had the feeling that they’d be proud of me. I’m also proud to be one of you. I was born here, began my career with TuS and FC. I discovered my love for football here and want to carry on representing our town proudly.”

During his speech, Mayor Schelshorn said to Löw: “You truly deserve it. Being named an honorary citizen is just recognition for your dedication to the region. Thanks also go to your wife, who always provides fantastic support. You can now no longer think of the town’s history without thinking of you.”
