Jakabfi fires defending champions Wolfsburg to third DFB Cup win

VfL Wolfsburg have won the Women's DFB Cup for a third time after 2012 and 2015. The defending champions came out on top against underdogs SC Sand in the final in Cologne, winning 2-1. Zsanett Jakabfi scored both goals for Wolfsburg, who are also still in with a chance of claiming their third Champions League triumph after 2013 and 2014, as they face Lyon in the final on Tuesday in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Former Wolfsburg player Jovana Damnjanovic gave the final debutants hope again after 27 minutes, when she cancelled out Wolfsburg’s opener, but Jakabfi struck a second time in the 80th minute to seal the outsiders' fate. Sand were looking to claim their biggest success in the history of the club, having surprisingly eliminated league champions FC Bayern München in the semi-final.

Gauck and Neid spectators in thrilling final

16,542 visitors, including Federal President Joachim Gauck and Germany coach Silvia Neid, witnessed the favourites get off to a perfect start. With ten international players in their starting line-up, including five Germany stars, the two-time league champions looked to take advantage of their feared attacking game. They took an early lead when Jakabfi produced a fine solo run to slot home after just seven minutes.

With the majority of the crowd now rooting for Sand, who had managed to claim a 1-0 league victory at Wolfsburg back in October, the outsiders pushed forward and looked particularly dangerous from their counterattacks. Anne van Bonn's long-range shot in the 21st minute just missed the target, but six minutes later, Damnjanovic kept her cool against her former teammate Almuth Schult to level the scoreline.

Popp misses huge chance

Both teams were now playing full-out attacking football. Wolfsburg's Alexandra Popp had the chance to reclaim the lead after 38 minutes, but her attempt from close range failed to find the back of the net.

Wolfsburg continued to look unsettled in the second half and Sand were pushed forward by the spectators. Damnjanovic recorded their best chance when her attempt from distance after 51 minutes went just high. With ten minutes left to play, Jakabfi bagged her second goal to put Wolfsburg on the path to victory.
