"It'll be anything but easy in Azerbaijan"

The sun was shining on the Caspian Sea and Baku was looking glorious as the DFB Team came into land. Horst Hrubesch’s men had been in the air for four and a half hours and their journey saw them pass over Poland Russia before they came into land in Azerbaijan’s capital. Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich and Co. are now preparing for this week’s opening Euro 2017 qualifier.

Hrubesch warns of a "tricky opponent"

Horst Hrubesch’s new look side will finally get up and running competitively this week after countless training sessions and friendly success over Denmark (2-1). Tuesday’s game (16:00 CEST) will be Germany’s first qualifier, but the hosts have already played twice – beating the Faroe Islands 1-0 but losing 2-0 to Austria. “They’ve shown themselves to be tricky opponents in both games so far. We need to take them seriously – it will be anything but easy,” warned the head coach.

One of the biggest issues facing the DFB-Team is the heat – it was 30 degrees when they landed. “Obviously the climate will make things harder for us,” explained Serge Gnabry. “But we’re looking forward to getting the campaign up and running as well as experiencing a new country.”

The majority of the squad haven’t visited the country before and at 3,300km it’s the longest trip that they will have to make during qualification. Despite the long journey, the hard work started today – the players started training this evening ahead of this week’s match.
