Ireland make the most of a Scottish slip-up

The business end of the European Championship qualifiers is upon us and things are starting to become more dramatic in Germany’s group. Die Mannschaft took a big step towards reaching France 2016 on Friday and here’s how the other sides in Group D got on.

Scotland, who Löw’s men face in Glasgow on Monday, slipped to fourth in the table thanks to their 1-0 defeat in Georgia. Ireland capitalised on that slip-up by beating Gibraltar 4-0 and consequently leaping into third.

Qazaishvili shocks the Scots

The omens weren’t great ahead of Scotland’s trip to Tbilisi. Their only previous match in the city was a 2-0 defeat in 2007 and they left the country without the points once again on Friday. Valeri Qazaishvili netted the winner in the 38th minute for Georgia, who now have six points from seven games.

Scotland (11 points) continue their quest to reach a first European Championship since 1996 on Monday. They face Joachim Löw’s side in Glasgow’s Hampden Park at 20:45 CEST. As it stands, Germany top the table (16). Poland (14) and Ireland (12) occupy the following two places.
