Ingolstadt draw, Aalen move off the bottom

2. Bundesliga table toppers FC Ingolstadt failed to secure a promotion spot on matchday 30 as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Union Berlin. With four games remaining in Germany's second division, Ingolstadt still have a nine point advantage over fourth place.

The drama in the relegation battle continues as both VfR Aalen and FC St. Pauli couldn’t win their respective games. Aalen managed a 1-1 away draw with FSV Frankfurt, while St. Pauli lost 2-1 to 1. FC Heidenheim. The point was enough for Aalen however, to leapfrog St. Pauli who are now the bottom side. Both teams now have 28 points to their name. This is the same as Erzgebirge Aue in 17th place, who face Eintracht Braunschweig on Monday evening.

Matip and Levels on target for Ingolstadt

Marvin Matip scored the opener for FCI in Berlin just five minutes after kick off and the visitors kept their lead well into the second half, before Björn Jopek's brace within just four minutes turned the game on its head. Tobias Levels scored a late equaliser to salvage a point for Ingolstadt.

Frankfurt's Mohamed Aoudia bagged an injury time goal in the first half, giving the hosts the lead against Aalen but the visitors showed real determination and equalised through Markus Steinhöfer midway through the second half.

Heidenheim secure 2. Bundesliga status for next season

Chances were rare in the game between Heidenheim and St. Pauli, as both teams struggled to create pressure on the opposing defence. Robert Leipertz bagged the opener for Heidenheim shortly after the hour mark, before Marc Schnatterer doubled their advantage, converting a penalty with less than ten minutes left to play. Christopher Nöthe scored in the closing stages of the game but it was too little too late for the Hamburg side.
