Important info on cup draw

The draw for the first round of the DFB Pokal is almost upon us. 64 teams eagerly await their match-up on 11th June, including a number of amateur clubs. Here is everything you need to know.

When is the draw?

The draw takes place on 11th June in the Deutsches Fußballmuseum for the first time at 17:50 CEST.

Who will be making the draw?

Sebastian Kehl, winner of the DFB Pokal in 2012 with Borussia Dortmund.

Who will be running it?

DFB President Reinhard Grindel

How many pots are there?

Two. The first, which contains all professional clubs, includes the teams from the Budnesliga and the 14th highest second-tier sides. The remaining four teams from the 2. Bundesliga, the fourth best sies from the third league as well as the 24 teams from the national associations make up the second pot, known as the amateur pot.

How have the 64 teams secured their place in the first round?

The 36 professional teams from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga from last season are automatically included in every season of the DFB Pokal. The same goes for the champions, second, third and fourth-placed teams in the third tier of German football from the previous season. Alongside these 40 teams, all amateur clubs in Germany have the chance to qualify for the 1st round of the DFB Cup.

In theory, even an eighth tier side can qualify for the first round. They would need to win their cup competition, which is how teams from lower down the chain are able to qualify for the big-time.

How does it work with the right to play at home?

Clubs from the amateur pot enjoy the right to play their DFB Pokal matches at home. There would only be an exception to the rule should two amateur sides be drawn against each other in the last 16. It would then be the first team drawn out of the hat to be the hosts.

When will the first-round matches take place?

All matches will be played between 11th and 14th August. Three fixtures are set for Friday, 11th August (20:45 CEST). 13 fixtures will occur on the Saturday, whilst the remaining twelve have been scheduled for Sunday (kick-off times at 15:30 CEST or 18:30 CEST on both weekend days). Monday’s four games will conclude the first round (18:30 CEST and 20:45 CEST).
