Ilkay Gündogan undergoes back surgery

Germany international and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan is expected to be sidelined for another three months after undergoing a back operation at the beginning of the week.

Gündogan has been out of action since August 2013 due to a nerve inflammation in his back, and after failing to show any significant improvement following conservative treatment, he decided to have surgery. A Dortmund press release stated that Gündogan had "successfully undergone a minimally-invasive operation of the lumbar portion of the spine without any complications" at the Schön-Klinik in the Harlaching district in Munich.

Gündogan was unavailable for both club and country for almost the entirety of the 2013/14 season. The 23-year-old’s last appearance was for Germany on 14 August 2013 in a 3-3 draw against Paraguay in Kaiserslautern. He extended his contract at Dortmund two months ago, penning a deal to keep him at the club until 2016.
