Hummels heads Bayern to victory

World Champion Mats Hummels led German record champions FC Bayern München to victory on matchday 12 of the Bundesliga. Hummels’ 57th minute winner was his first goal of the season and ensured a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkersen. It was the first win in three competitive games for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Thiago (30’) put Bayern into the lead, with Leverkusen then equalising five minutes later through Hakan Calhanoglu (35’). Hummels then scored the winner from a corner with a powerful header.

The defending champions remain hard on the heels of promoted side RB Leipzig. Following their 4-1 win over SC Freiburg, Leipzig now sit on 30 points, three ahead of the Bavarians in second. Leverkusen occupy ninth place with 16 points.

Strong start from Leverkusen

The home side needed a few minutes to settle into the game. Even in the early stages, Bayer saw more of the ball and created the first few chances. Admir Mehmedi (2’) missed one of these chances, after his low shot just missed Manuel Neuer’s goal. Only after a good 15 minutes did Bayern begin to find themselves in the game and quickly had a good chance to take the lead. However, Germany national team player Joshua Kimmich (19’) could only head Douglas Costa’s cross into the hands of Bernd Leno.

However, Leno was beaten ten minutes later. Philipp Lahm struck a powerful shot from the edge of the boy which was initially saved by the Bayer Leverkusen and national team keeper. However, Thaigo was on hand to head home the rebound and put Bayern into a 1-0 lead. The goal played into Bayern’s hands, with Ancelotti’s side taking control of the game in this period. All of a sudden, however, the scores were level. Calhanoglu got the better of Lahm down the left-hand side before playing a neat one-two with Brandt and finishing past Neuer with an unstoppable effort.

After the break, Bayern came out of the dressing rooms with more purpose and pushed the away side deep into their own half. Firstly, Leno kept out a shot from Douglas Costa (55’), but was powerless to keep out Hummel’s header from a corner. Bayern then looked to put the game to bed with the introduction from the bench of superstars Arjen Robben and Frank Ribéry. Leverkusen pushed on in search of an equaliser, but couldn’t weren’t quite clinical enough. Their best chance of an equaliser was missed by second half substitute Kevin Volland, who headed just wide after a defensive mistake from Javi Martinez. After Neuer saved Calhanoglus free-kick (90+3’), the game was decided.
