Hummels bruised, Boateng wearing thumb brace

MRI scans have now confirmed the extent of the injuries Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels sustained in Germany’s 4-0 win in their opening World Cup group match against Portugal in Salvador. Bayern defender Boateng partially tore the collateral ligament in his right hand in a fall, and must now wear a thumb brace for six weeks. He can continue to play during this time subject to the referee’s approval.

Hummels has sustained bruising to his right thigh with some bleeding into the surrounding muscles. Germany’s team doctors will wait to see how healing progresses before determining when the Dortmund centre-back can return to full training and whether he will be able to feature in Die Mannschaft’s second group match against Ghana in Fortaleza on Saturday (live on ARD from 21:00 CEST).
