HSV win Nordderby and deepen Werder’s risk of relegation

Hamburg won the 104th Nordderby 2-1 at a sold-out Volksparkstadion. On the 31st matchday, they increased their chances of staying up this season, while increasing Werder’s chances of going down. Bruno Labbadia’s side took the lead after just five minutes and then doubled it less than half-an hour later. Werder fought back in the second 45, but only managed to pull the deficit back to one.

Lasogga wins match early on

The home side took advantage of Bremen’s sloppy start, Müller breaking free of the defence after just five minutes and playing a defence-splitting ball across to Lasogga, who just had to tap in to an empty net to put his tam 1-0 up. Werder lacked reaction and continued to try and soak up pressure, but it wasn’t to pay off as Lasogga scored his second of the evening on the stroke of the half-hour mark. Ostrzolek beat Vestergaard down the left and crossed for Lasogga who headed in at the near post.

A changed Werder

Left with a mammoth task, Werder did well under the circumstances. They came out in the second half and put pressure on, looking like a new Bremen side. Their evening was, however, summed up by the penalty incident. After Djourou had taken down Pizarro inside the box, the Peruvian striker stepped up to the spot and failed to score. Drobny guessed the right way and held onto the ball.

Ujah scored for the Green-Whites shortly after but they failed to then create another clear-cut chance. Despite the second half flurry from Bremen, it was a deserved win for their rivals.
