HSV drop to 17th after 2-0 home loss to Wolfsburg

Relegation fears continue to grow in Hamburg as the club’s new head coach Peter Knäbel suffered a 2-0 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg in his first home game in charge. The defeat sees HSV drop to 17th place, meaning they occupy a direct relegation spot for the first time since November earlier this season. The northern club have now failed to secure a win in any of their last eight games and haven’t scored a goal in 495 minutes.

Josuha Guilavogui delivered the first blow after just ten minutes: Hamburg's Cléber lost the ball to Kevin De Bruyne, who immediately played in Guilavogui, allowing the France international to fire the ball through the legs of former Germany international René Adler. Daniel Caligiuri added a second goal for the visitors in the 73rd minute, finishing off a neat counterattack. The misery continued for HSV though, as Johan Djourou was sent off for a second bookable offence shortly before the final whistle.

While Hamburg continue to battle relegation, Wolfsburg's impressive season continues, having secured a semi-final spot in the DFB Cup, and with a Europa League quarterfinal against SSC Napoli on the agenda over the next two weeks. It was the 18th Bundesliga win of the campaign for Dieter Hecking's men, who are well on course to end this season as runners-up.
